“Carry On is the embodiment of freedom.” -ML
The Carry On sculptures inhabit a space between object and embodiment. Constructed from layers of leather over wood, each strap is meticulously stitched and edge-painted with precision, transforming materials associated with utility and fashion into structures for reflection. Rising in elongated arches, the sculptures evoke portals, rainbows, plant forms, or pathways suspended in motion. Individually, each sculpture asserts a distinct presence but together they operate as an immersive environment: a shifting landscape or forest. Their collective arrangement encourages movement through and around the work, inviting viewers into a contemplative encounter with repetition, rhythm, and spatial tension.
The works negotiate a series of dualities—soft and rigid, masculine and feminine, confined and unrestricted. Referencing the language of baggage, the sculptures consider the emotional and psychological weight individuals carry throughout their lives: memory, identity, expectation, trauma, and desire. However, the Carry On sculptures are made of leather straps with no bag in sight, a metaphor for freedom from baggage. Unbound to proceed—these sculptures create space for liberation, movement, and possibility.
